David Lee: Award-Winning Business Coaching That Transforms Results

From Banking to Business Coaching

Business growth coach David Lee has been recognised with the UK’s Best Client Results award at a national awards ceremony. But how did a former sales and finance expert from the financial sector become an award-winning business coach with a reputation for helping businesses transform their performance?

David’s career began shortly after leaving school at the age of 16.

“I left school as soon as I was 16 and went straight into the glamorous world of banking, flattening cardboard boxes in the back office of a NatWest branch in South Wales! But I worked hard and ended up being one of the youngest people to hold the position of branch manager at 29.”

After getting married and moving to the Midlands, David went on to manage one of NatWest’s national sales teams until the bank’s takeover in 2000. Rather than wait to see what the future held, he took control of his career and went on to gain another 15 years of senior business-to-business sales experience with HBOS and Hitachi Capital.

Taking Control of His Own Future

During his time at Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, David helped secure major contracts, including a substantial fleet agreement with NatWest and another with the Environment Agency. Although the financial rewards were significant, the demands of the role began to affect his quality of life.

“During my time with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, I helped secure huge deals, including a massive fleet contract for NatWest and another for the Environment Agency. The financial rewards were great, but I was working away from home during the week and it was really affecting my quality of life. I arranged an amicable exit from Hitachi and started a business to help business owners extract themselves from the daily grind that I had found myself in.”

In 2015, David launched his ActionCOACH UK business to help business owners across the Midlands improve their performance, take control of their businesses and create a better balance between work and life. Today, his clients span a wide range of industries and sectors.

Helping Business Owners See the Bigger Picture

David’s approach begins with an introductory telephone conversation. He uses this initial discussion to understand the business owner’s challenges, identify opportunities and explore whether coaching is the right fit.

“I’ll start off with an introductory chat on the phone and, to be honest, if we’re going to work together, that’s when it tends to make sense to the business owner. I don’t pretend to know the technical side of their business, but I can pretty much always help with the business of business: sales, marketing, finance, customer service and team management. In just one short conversation, we usually identify areas in need of improvement and I explain how we can work together.”

The next step is to meet in person and discuss practical solutions. David finds that many business owners face similar challenges. Some are frustrated because their businesses are not growing as quickly as they would like, while others have grown so rapidly that they struggle to keep up with the demands of running the company.

By helping clients understand where they are now and where they want to be, David works with them to identify the changes that will make the biggest difference.

Building Trust Through a Results-Driven Approach

David does not charge for the initial conversations and meeting. For clients who progress to regular one-to-one coaching, he also offers two guarantees designed to give them confidence in the process.

“There’s normally a concern about the cost of hiring a business coach. I have the benefit of knowing the return on investment of my services is significant, both financially and in work-life balance, but new clients can be nervous. If a client does not like me or see the benefit from either their alignment meeting or their first month of coaching, I will refund my fees. I’m proud to say this hasn’t happened yet, but it does demonstrate that I’m here because I truly want to help my clients see results in their businesses.”

Once a client has clarity about their ambitions and their current position, the coaching work begins. Together, they look for ways to solve problems, introduce efficiencies and gain greater control of the business. The aim is to close the gap between what the owner wants to achieve and what is happening in reality.

Making Progress, One Step at a Time

David offers weekly or fortnightly coaching sessions, either face to face or by video conference. Each session is tailored to the client’s priorities and progress.

“Clients choose either weekly or fortnightly coaching. We meet face to face or I can coach via video conference too. A coaching session will typically kick off with what’s been great since we last met, what challenges they’ve faced, then move on to what we need to focus on next and reviewing longer-term plans.

“The client decides on what they want to achieve by our next session. It’s their business, their life, their future, their success and they can recognise what is realistic in that time frame. Clients often come to me feeling they have no headspace and I need to protect them from taking on too much. It can even be as simple as agreeing what is the smallest thing they can do to move the business forward during crazy periods in their business.”

This practical, flexible approach helps clients make meaningful progress without becoming overwhelmed. Rather than adding more pressure to an already busy schedule, David helps business owners identify the most important priorities and take manageable steps towards their goals.

From Solving Problems to Transforming Businesses

David still works with clients who joined him during the early days of his business. Over time, some have progressed from problem-solving support to more transformational coaching.

These business owners have developed the systems, teams and confidence needed to step away from the day-to-day running of their companies. David can then work with their management teams while the owners focus on other ambitions and interests.

For David, the most important factor in choosing a client is attitude, not the size or sector of the business.

“I select the clients I work with on attitude rather than company size or sector. If a business owner is open to learning how to understand their business better and willing to follow a path of personal and professional development, we can work wonders together. It’s through being straightforward with my clients that they realise that business owners have been making some of the same mistakes for years and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. What would be a shame is if you don’t take action to address those mistakes. If you do, you can make a better life for yourself, your family and the people who work for you.”

By encouraging clients to recognise challenges without judgement and take action to address them, David helps business owners build companies that deliver better results and support the lives they want to lead.

Recognised for Outstanding Client Results

David’s commitment to helping business owners achieve meaningful change led to his award for the UK’s Best Client Results. Selected from more than 170 business coaches, his achievements were highlighted by ActionCOACH UK co-founder Ian Christelow, who described the impact of David’s work as “life-changing”.

Ian shared examples of the transformations David had helped clients achieve:

“David has taken one client whose business was failing, having only paid herself a salary for three out of 12 months, to no longer needing her overdraft facility and having so much control of her newly-successful business to have enough time to launch another. He helped a family business increase turnover from £4.9 million to £8 million and grow the team from 60 to 90 staff whilst the CEO is free to build his dream home, all in just 18 months.”

These examples demonstrate the potential impact of business coaching when owners have the right support, clear goals and a willingness to make changes.

The Reward of Making a Difference

For David, the award was a welcome recognition of the work he does with clients and the trust they place in him.

“This award win is the icing on the cake for me. I’m absolutely elated. I was hoping to win the award for Central Midlands but had no idea I’d grab the top UK award! In the corporate world, you can save a large corporation a million pounds and it hardly registers with them, but when you make a difference to a small business owner, it can make a huge impact. It’s thanks to them trusting me that I’ve won this award.”

David’s journey from banking and corporate sales to award-winning business coaching highlights what can be achieved when professional experience is combined with a passion for helping others succeed.

Through ActionCOACH UK, he has built a business that draws on his commercial expertise while helping business owners improve their companies, reclaim their time and create better futures for themselves, their families and their teams.
