Turning Personal Experience into a New Career
For Juliette Ryley, success has always been about more than financial results. It is about building a business that supports her family, helping other business owners thrive and creating a life that feels rewarding both professionally and personally.
Based in Warwickshire, Juliette lives with her husband, Ben, and their four children. Having grown up around a family business, she developed an understanding of entrepreneurship early in life. After leaving school, she joined her family's printing firm, where she studied graphic design and began learning the realities of running a business.
“I fell pregnant with my first child at 19 years old but I continued to work and completed a business degree through the Open University in the following years. When I inherited my father’s print business, it was with the help of a mentor that I brought it into the 21st Century. My mentor, Guy, had been my father’s accountant and he really helped me out when my father died. When the business was sold in 2014, it was Guy who encouraged me to become a business coach. Unfortunately, Guy died about 8 weeks after I joined ActionCOACH UK, so he never got to see my success and the difference he made to my life.”
Guy’s guidance had a lasting impact on Juliette. After selling the family business in 2014, she began exploring business coaching and running a local business group. When a scheduled guest speaker let her down, a friend recommended someone who was happy to speak at events. That person was Mark Jennings, an ActionCOACH UK franchise partner since 2011.
After talking with Mark, Juliette decided to investigate the franchise opportunity for herself.
Why Juliette Chose ActionCOACH UK
Juliette began her journey with a telephone conversation with Julie Wagstaff, co-founder of ActionCOACH UK and Franchise Recruitment Director. She then attended a discovery day hosted by fellow UK co-founder Ian Christelow.
Three things stood out as she considered her next move: the support available, the established coaching system and the potential to build a profitable business.
“There were three things that stood out for me when making my decision to join ActionCOACH UK. Firstly, the UK support team and their calendar of over 70 days of support are world-class, but then you add on the support that is so forthcoming from over 180 franchisees in the UK and I felt extremely comfortable in my decision. Secondly, ActionCOACH’s system is outstanding with over 3,500 strategies and tactics, guaranteed to make businesses successful, including your own. Finally, the earning potential is good with some franchise partners banking over £1 million a year. Even if I grow to a quarter of that, I’ll be happy.”
For Juliette, joining an established franchise offered advantages that would have been difficult to replicate independently. The systems, training and network of fellow coaches gave her a framework for building her business with greater confidence.
“It was clear that I could do more by joining the franchise than by starting from scratch by myself. I went into the due diligence phase and after just three months, I was booked onto my initial training week. The training was very intense but also an amazing experience. I learnt so much about myself. It was a massive eye opener. I was also thinking about how life would have been a much smoother ride had I known about the ActionCOACH system years before!”
The learning did not end after her initial training. Juliette also had access to ongoing development opportunities through the UK and US support teams, including regular live webinars covering client acquisition, coaching techniques and ways to improve client results.
Starting Small and Building with Purpose
Juliette launched her ActionCOACH UK business in January 2016 with a clear first-year target: to secure six one-to-one coaching clients while working just three days a week.
She knew that starting a new business would require persistence, hard work and a willingness to learn. With the franchise system and support network behind her, she began building her client base and developing her marketing approach.
“It was hard to start with as, like starting any business, you’re doing something completely new. You need to find your feet and work very hard. It does pay off though and, if you follow the system and take up all the help and support, it becomes very lucrative. My first client was referred to me by Mark Jennings and I still work with them now. Following that, LinkedIn has been by far the best marketing strategy for me. I was soon on my way to reaching my year two goal of generating enough income to put both my youngest children through private education.”
That goal was particularly meaningful. Juliette wanted to create a business that could provide financial security for her family while allowing her to remain actively involved in her children's lives.
As her coaching business grew, she developed a client base of business owners receiving one-to-one coaching. Sessions took place at her office, at clients' premises and remotely through video calls.
She also collaborated with fellow ActionCOACH UK franchise partners Mark Jennings and Matt Ewer to deliver GrowthCLUB, a quarterly 90-day planning event that brings business owners together to review their goals and plan their next steps.
The Real Reward: Seeing Clients Succeed
Achieving her personal financial goals was an important milestone for Juliette, but she soon discovered that one of the most rewarding parts of her work was seeing clients make meaningful changes to their businesses and lives.
“It’s by far the best thing about being an ActionCOACH UK franchise partner. All of my clients are successful and I believe success can be measured in all levels. For instance, when I met Jo from Willowbrook Nurseries, she was running round like a woman possessed. She had money problems, staff issues and was working round the clock. In the past two years, Jo has transformed her businesses into a profitable company where she only needs to spend four days a week and, in her own words, has a dream team.”
For Juliette, this is what business coaching is all about. Success is not simply measured in revenue or profit. It can also mean having a stronger team, reducing stress, improving working relationships and creating more time for life outside the business.
By helping business owners understand their challenges and take practical steps towards their goals, she aims to help them build businesses that work better for everyone involved.
Designing a Business Around Family Life
One of Juliette's priorities from the outset was to create a business that fitted around her family rather than allowing work to take over.
Her routine reflects that intention. She gets up early to meditate and focus on personal development before the household wakes up. She then spends her working day coaching clients or managing her business, with a clear goal of being home by 5pm.
“I get up at 5.30am to meditate and complete my daily learning. It’s the best time of day for me as everyone else is still asleep and I get some ‘me time’ before the typical morning carnage starts with four children and a husband! I’m in the office for 7.30am most mornings. I coach three days a week where I often travel to meet my clients and then I’m based in the office Mondays and Fridays. I’m always home for 5.00pm and at least twice a week, I’ll pick the kids up from school. I’m 100% Mum when not in the office. Since joining ActionCOACH UK, I’ve changed the way I look at life, family, friends and myself. I believe I’m a better person for that.”
For Juliette, flexibility does not mean that building a business is effortless. It means being intentional about how she uses her time, setting boundaries and deciding what matters most.
She is also candid about the challenges women can face when balancing business ownership and family responsibilities.
“Running a business in heels is always going to have its challenges. The business world is very male orientated and many industries are competitive. I think many women don’t reach their full potential due to interference, whether that be by corporate challenges or home-life expectations. Being organised is key and I learnt this in the early days. There’s no such thing as time management, it’s self-management that makes the difference. Be proud of yourself and stop worrying what other people think. It’s none of their business!”
Her experience has taught her that creating a sustainable working life requires more than a full diary and good intentions. It takes self-management, confidence and a clear understanding of personal priorities.
Looking to the Future
Having established her coaching practice, Juliette's ambitions extend beyond running a successful business on her own. She wants to grow into a coaching firm, employ a team of coaches and help more businesses across Warwickshire achieve their potential.
“I now plan to develop my business into a coaching firm, employing a team of coaches who will change the face of business ownership in Warwickshire. I want to play a part in helping local businesses escape today’s failure rates of four in five businesses not making it past five years of operation. Business owners deserve to enjoy work and life and so do the people they employ and the community surrounding them.”
Juliette also wants to support the next generation of ActionCOACH UK franchise partners. Having benefited from coaching and guidance herself, she hopes to become a coach's coach and help new franchise partners develop their skills and businesses.
“I would also like to become a coach’s coach. Every new ActionCOACH UK franchise partner is given their own coach for free until they reach a good level of income. This is another fantastic level of support which I benefited from in the early days and I’d love to give back by helping new franchise partners now I have a couple of years’ experience under my belt.”
Her ambitions reflect the importance she places on community and shared success. For Juliette, building her own business is only part of the opportunity. Helping others grow, learn and achieve their goals is equally important.
A Community That Makes a Difference
Looking back on her decision to join the franchise, Juliette sees the relationships she has built as one of its most valuable benefits.
“Joining ActionCOACH UK is the best thing I have ever done. It’s a fantastic community who help each other continuously and I have made life-long friendships with other coaches and clients, both of which I expect to appeal to women looking at starting a business. I’m here for good now. They can’t get rid of me!”
Juliette's story shows how a franchise can provide a route to business ownership that combines professional ambition with personal priorities. By drawing on her experience, embracing a proven system and making full use of the support available, she has built a business around the life she wants to lead.
